Forward
to Edition:
For ten years now (1998-2008)
I have endeavored to ensure that philosophy students cultivate the zest for Logic
to grab a good pass at the A-Level GCE. Examination. This umpteenth edition, Deduction and Symbolic
Logic is a most welcome course guide for both
teachers and students of
A- Level Philosophy for Cameroon GCE. Examination. I have
included not only many problem –solving exercises but also
M.C.Qs on logic, Western
philosophy and African philosophy. Any student desirous
to score a good grade in the exam is strongly advised to work on all these questions.
They are not meant to be GCE speculations but as stimuli to ascertain how much the
student has understood and retained from each chapter of this book. May this manual
be rewarding to those who use
it for exams.
Important Details:
This book has been presented in
the following format;
Section one
Deductive Logic:
It deals with the principles and
methods of self consistency in thinking and reasoning. This section threats concepts
such as; Laws of thought, operations of the mind, Definition and Logical Division,
Propositions ,Inference ,Extended Arguments and Fallacies. Section Two:
Symbolic Logic
In this section, we seek to devise,
with symbols, techniques that permit us to formulate statements and arguments with
precision. The key elements treated in this section include the value of special
symbols for negation, conjunction,
dysfunctions, material implication as truth-functional
connectives. We also explain the truth table and show how it can be used to determine
the validity or invalidity of an argument form.
Section Three:
Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)
With the introduction of MCQs into
the Cameroon G.C.E examinations as one of the methods of assessment, this section
concentrates on Logic, Western Philosophy and African Philosophy. These questions
test;
A) Analysis; that
is the ability in the candidate to breakdown material into its component parts so
that its organizational structure may be understood.
B) Synthesis; that
is the ability to put together to form a new whole.
C) Evaluation; that
is the ability to judge the value of material for a given purpose.
This book will not only be of value
to students of Philosophy for the Advanced Level G.C.E examination but also to those
who wish to broaden their faculty.
